Meet the Crew of Navigrafia

Jessica Walker, MFA

Jessica Walker is a writer and teacher with extensive experience in cultivating creativity and productivity from other writers. With a decade of experience in publishing, workshopping, and editing, she brings positivity and dedication to the writing environment at land or sea. A writer of both fiction and nonfiction, Jessica’s creative writing has been published in New Letters, Witness, The American Scholar, The Indiana Review, Kenyon Review Online, Black Warrior Review, and elsewhere. She was the winner of Bayou’s James Knudsen Prize and Witness’ Literary Award for Creative Nonfiction. Her journalism has received state and regional awards from the Society of Professional Journalists. She has received the support of the Elizabeth George Foundation, the Sewanee Writers Conference and Bread Loaf Writers Conference, where she serves on the admissions board. She holds an MFA from the University of Virginia. She is currently an Assistant Professor at Texas A&M International University, where she serves as coordinator of the creative writing minor.

Sean Maloney, Captain

Sean Maloney is licensed captain with extensive experience sailing the Pacific Northwest. A US Navy veteran who served on a carrier, Sean is currently a sailing instructor and consultant. Safety on the seas is of utmost importance to Sean. His certifications include: USCG Operator of Uninspected Passenger Vessels (OUPV) Near Coastal, USCG Master Inland 50 GRT. Sail & Tow Endorsements, US Sailing International Offshore Safety at Sea (2025), and various ASA sailing instructor certifications. While not sailing for pleasure on his Cape Dory 27, instruction, boat delivery, he is a Military Liaison Officer with the Forest Service.

Juan M. Restrepo, PhD, Crew

Dr. Juan Restrepo, Navigrafia crew and deck swabber, holds a PhD in Physics from Penn State. He started sailing during his time as a post-doc in math at the University of Chicago, crewing at DuSable and Belmont Harbor, as well as Eshel 22 class regattas. He has earned all of the 100 series American Sailing Association certifications and will become a licensed Captain in 2026. When he’s not sailing his Ericson 30, Juan works as a research scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. His resume includes stints as a mathematics professor at UCLA, University of Arizona, Oregon State University, and University of Tennessee. He is a fellow of the American Physical Society, and of the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics.
